Medical Alert Systems > Louisiana Medical Alert Systems and Senior Resources in Louisiana

About 600,000 seniors live in Louisiana, and 12.7% of them are living in poverty. That is the second highest rate in the nation (behind Mississippi), and it is very alarming. These are people who do not have the means to take care of themselves, so the state has to do it for them. The Governor?s Office on Elderly Affairs is rising to the challenge, providing programs and services for seniors, especially for these low-income residents.

The Louisiana Department of Disabilities, Aging
and Independent Living is tasked with taking care of this exploding population, with a stated mission of making Louisiana “the best state in which to grow old.”

These programs include: It hopes to do this by providing a wide array of services to seniors. Those programs include:
--Caregiver Respite Services: Giving caregivers a temporary break.
-- Elderly Protective Services: Protecting seniors who cannot protect themselves because of advanced age, illness or disability.
-- Food Boxes: A free delivery of food each month for low-income seniors.
-- Foster Grandparent Program: Seniors serving as role models, mentors and friends to children.
-- Legal Assistance: Making sure seniors understand their legal rights.
-- Long-Term Care Ombudsman: This watchdog investigates and resolves complaints made by residents of long-term care facilities.
-- Meals on Wheels: Home delivered meals.
-- New Eyes for the Needy: Free prescription eyeglasses for low-income seniors.
-- Personal Care/Homemaker: In-home services including meal preparation, grooming, errands and light housekeeping.
-- Senior Community Employment Program: Helping low-income seniors who still have to work train for and get jobs.
-- SenioRx: Providing free or almost free prescription drugs for low-income seniors.
-- Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP): Formerly known as “food stamps,” coupons to buy food.
-- “Your Life, Your Health:” Workshops, education and advice on dealing with chronic health issues and living a healthy life.

While money is tight for many Louisiana seniors, they might still think about making room in their budget for a medical alert system. Such a system can save your life some day in the event of a medical emergency, and you really cannot put a price on that.

A medical alert system gives you monitoring 24 hours a day, seven days a week. This is something you can only get at a long-term care facility, which most independent seniors would like to avoid. So if you can get the same monitoring at home, why wouldn’t you do it?

Medical alert companies are national, meaning they operate in all 50 states, including Louisiana.
